Who We Are

New Beginnings is the only nonprofit agency in Maine that is dedicated to preventing and ending youth homelessness. Since 1980, we have improved the lives of more than 8,000 runaway and homeless youth in Maine. We strive to provide the youth we serve with the opportunities for the SAFETY, CONNECTION, and GROWTH that all young people need to thrive. Whether a young person is facing a night on the streets for the very first time or has been surviving on their own for years, New Beginnings can help.

OUR MISSION - New Beginnings partners with youth to create lasting change so all youth have a safe place to live and opportunities to grow.

OUR VISION - Our vision is a world in which all youth are safe and valued in their communities.

What We Do

New Beginnings work with teens, young adults, their families, and other providers to ensure that vulnerable youth in Maine have access to the safe housing, supportive services, and connections to caring relationships that they need to become healthy and stable adults.

New Beginnings’ spectrum of shelter, housing, family mediation, counseling, educational support, prevention education, and outreach services are designed to prevent young people from becoming homeless, support struggling families, and provide an essential “safety net” for young people in Maine who are at risk of homelessness - including the only youth shelter in Maine that is licensed to serve teens and young adults with 24-hour care.

Our agency is based in Lewiston-Auburn with program sites in Androscoggin, Franklin, and Kennebec counties serving youths ages 12-21 and their families from all over Maine. On average, more than 30% are LGBTQ and 15% are youth of color. Our dedicated staff members focus on creating caring and trusting relationships with young people – which is the heart of our work. We know that positive relationships are the foundation of the process to bring about change needed to help Maine's most vulnerable youth successfully transition to adulthood.
