Who We Are

Rural Community Action Ministry (RCAM) is a private nonprofit 501(c) organization providing key services to vulnerable rural families in Maine since February 1970. RCAM provides services to 14 rural towns. Androscoggin, County: Greene, Leeds, Livermore, Livermore Falls, Sabattus, Turner, and Wales. Kennebec, County: Litchfield, Monmouth, and Wayne. Oxford, County: Buckfield, Canton, Hartford and Sumner.

RCAM focuses on assisting people in crisis or at risk to remove barriers to basic well-being, using an integrated bundled services delivery approach. RCAM works with people to meet their needs for safe, adequate shelter, clothing, food, and basic well being in a manner that maintains or improves self-worth and dignity.

What We Do

A list of services we provide:

Volunteer Services: This program coordinates over 100 community members, and RCAM partnerships volunteers to support and assist each of RCAM's services.

Financial Literacy: RCAM's newest service, "Your Money, Your Goals" launched in 2019, is consumer driven and provides a series of financial literacy tools to help people learn how to manage their money and achieve economic independence.

Homeless Prevention Services: Helps with utility disconnection, rent eviction, and emergency fuel. Provides access to resources, information, and encouragement identified as necessary to reach economic stability and self-sufficiency.

Comprehensive Family Shelter/ Senior Services: Volunteers are coordinated to provide outreach services to rural elderly and or disabled. Services include transportation to medical appointments, and monitoring of home safety and other health and safety factors.

Housing Services: Low cost or no cost housing repairs to respond to the needs of low-income individuals, families, elderly and or disabled clients by providing minor home repair, housing rehabilitation, and safety accommodations.

Family Shelter, Transitional Unit, and Senior Residential Housing: RCAM operates a two- unit family homeless shelter. The RCAM Transitional Unit houses one family for up to two years.

Hunger prevention and gardening Services: Gardening Services help people learn to plan, plant, maintain and harvest their own gardens, meeting nutritional needs with fresh produce. This program provides tilling, seeds, and Master Gardner demonstrations.

Information and referral: We will help connect people to additional resource providers to meet needs when we cant help.

RCAM helps to financially support our 14 town food banks. We also helped create local Hunger Coalitions to increase Community awareness of local food insecurity and it's impact.
