Museum Docent Description The word docent is derived from the Latin word “docere,” meaning “to teach.” Docents at the Poland Spring Preservation Society will be teaching our visitors about the Maine State Building, All Souls Chapel and The Historic Bottling Plant, along with the history of the property. This position is seasonal, May through October. Internships are also available if college credit is needed. Benefits will include: -          Subscription to The Turret -          Free Admission for Immediate Family members when accompanied by the employed docent -          Attendance to networking events Training                 Training will be done by the Administrative Assistant. They will provide the tour speech and books to read about the history of the area. There are also numerous people available to ask questions about the history, if one is unclear. Docents will be required to shadow a tour by Admin or Volunteer, for each building before working independently. First tour will be supervised and critiqued.                 Training for other job duties will also be provided by the Administrative Assistant. Tours After the satisfactory completion of these requirements, docents will be requested to give tours. You will be responsible for keeping up with the frequently changing exhibitions and occasional changes to the permanent collections in the following ways: -           Read materials related to the exhibitions and tour-giving methods. The Museum’s library of catalogues, art journals, books, and special exhibition information is available to docents anytime during Museum hours. -          Stay in contact with Administrative Assistant (Kate MacGregor). She will be glad to work personally with you to help you prepare for your tours. Contact her if you have any questions or special needs at (207) 860-8513.   Other Duties Docents will also be required to: -          Welcome and greet guests and receiving admission fee, in the Maine State Building and All Souls Chapel -          Gift shop and membership sales -          Helping with updates on exhibits -          Cataloging of objects and artifacts -          Daily up keep and cleaning of buildings Before and after weddings and other events -          Answering of phones -          Promoting fundraisers and weekly events
