Volunteer: Volunteer Screening Team Member (Virtual)

Become a Volunteer Screener for the Red Cross!

In the Volunteer Screener role, you may well be the first real Red Crosser a candidate gets to talk with, and they are eager. You’ll want to seek to understand what brought prospective volunteers to the Red Cross, their areas of interest, and what positions they would find most meaningful. You’ll use your understanding from talking with the volunteer candidates to match expressed interest with the needs of the organization. Therefore, you’ll be connecting new recruits with positions for which they are both interested, well-suited, and needed.  Then you will update their status in our volunteer management system.

You can do this role remotely from your living room in Northern New England or, if you prefer, from an NNE Red Cross office near you. You’ll want to have 4 – 8 hours a week available for this role.

To learn more, visit www.redcross.org/volunteer/become-a-volunteer or email VolunteerNNE@redcross.org.

Volunteer: Enrichment Teacher

Enrichment Classes are opportunities for youth to participate in activities that they consider fun, interesting, and worthwhile.  Classes can be a wide range of activities, projects, or discussions and should combine the teachers passions with the students interests.  These classes can be geared towards any of our K-12 youth and take place on site at Tree Street Youth.

Enrichment classes are meant to engage youth in their own educational process.  They are meant to spark passions or get students to explore and invest in passions they already have.  This process promotes self-motivation which is why we heavily encourage youth to participate but never obligate participation.

Volunteer: Become a Big Brother or Big Sister!

Community Concepts Big Brothers Big Sisters stands on the mission of providing strong and enduring, professionally supported 1 to 1 relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. Being a Big Brother or a Big Sister does not require any special skills. A volunteer is expected to become a friend to a child and is not expected to be a skilled counselor or social worker. Our volunteers are expected to make a minimum commitment of one year to the program. During that year, Bigs in our Community-Based program are expected to spend 6-8 hours a month with their LIttle Brother or Sister.  Bigs in our Site-Based program commit to meeting a child during school or an afterschool program for one hour a week for an entire school year.  In the Community-Based program, children are between the ages of 7-14 when they come into our program. Community-Based Bigs typically pick up a Little at his or her house and have outings in the community doing activities that both people enjoy doing.  Site-Based Bigs typically meet Littles during lunch or for a regular hour each week during an afterschool program. The qualities we are looking for in our volunteers are maturity, stability, patience, consistency and reliability. Volunteer: ""Wood" you like to work with your hands?

Can you get creative with a lathe? Do you long to break out of the cookie-cutter birdhouse and stepping stool molds of woodworking? Then we want you! This summer we're hosting a variety of this ever-so-hip-these-days photo booths during Art Walks. We've created some paper mustaches, funny hats and speech bubbles for folks to use as props but would love to have some more durable wooden versions created. We'll need a variety of mustaches, beards, glasses, hats, lips and more in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes. They'll need to be attached solidly to wooden dowels so folks can hold them up during their pictures! In addition to all that other stuff there are some really creative pieces we'd love to have as well. (A Batman Mask! Shakespeare's Hair! chalkboard painted thought bubbles!) We've got the templates you need to get started but welcome your own creative ideas as well! If you have the desire to make any or all of these we want you! Supply your own wood, dowels and paint or let us help pay for it (Just tell us what to get!)

Volunteer: Volunteer tutors needed at Lewiston Public Library!

Help kids achieve academic success by offering homework help and general support! The program runs Monday-Thursday and offers drop-in homework help for students in grades 6 -12, with most students in grades 7-10. It runs from 3:30-5:30 and an average of 30 students come every day. It is primarily attended by ELL students from the refugee communities. These are very hard-working students and we are grateful for any time you can commit to helping them. You don?t need to be a math whiz or a spelling bee champ to help out ? and you don't need previous tutoring/teaching experience to apply. A lot of the students just need help understanding what they are reading, writing answers with correct grammar, using the computer to do projects, and learning basic math. Volunteers are provided with initial pre-service training before their first day and then ongoing support throughout the year.
