Volunteer: Orientation AmbassadorThe role of the Orientation Ambassador is to assist clients in navigating their first experience at the Dempsey Center (DC) and supporting those impacted by cancer. This is accomplished by meeting with new clients (patients and caregivers) and providing center orientations in Lewiston or South Portland with the goal of matching individual client needs and interests to specific DC programs and services.
COMMITMENT: 4 hours per week, standing shift. Alternative schedules would be considered. Dempsey Center Culture and position specific trainingREGULAR DUTIES INCLUDE: Provide tours of center space; program and service areas Offer introduction and information about all DC direct services, programs and support groups Answer center related questions Register clients for programs and services; paper and electronically Collaborate with DC front desk staff to schedule appointments at the end of the orientation Conduct follow up calls with previous clients Conduct follow up calls with clients that scheduled an orientation and canceled Other duties and projects as assigned Participate in volunteer orientation and ongoing training and evaluationQUALIFICATIONS: Empathetic, caring, open-minded and dependable Excellent customer service, listening and conversation skills Sensitive to the emotional highs and lows that can accompany the cancer experience Assess distress in a client and respond appropriately Experience supporting people in difficult situations preferred Understand role limitations and able to “hand off” client and families to appropriate staff Able to follow tour guidelines and assertively direct clients Able to work both independently and as part of a team. with a positive mental attitude Basic to intermediate computer skills Able to learn information and present to clients individually, and in small group Understand and follows directions Understand and adhere to confidentiality policy and HIPAA Understand and practice safety procedures as trained Attend standard Dempsey Center culture training sessions Physical ability to: stand or walk for 2-4 hours per shift sit for 1 hour at a time

Regular Duties Include: Register clients for programs either in person or by phone Greet and welcome clients; directing inquiries to designated department Sign-in clients for appointments and programs (involves online software) Answer client questions as they arise, referring people to resources at the Center Answer the phone and direct calls to staff as needed Willingness to take on additional tasks such as mailings or other projects that may arise Maintain general appearance of the spaces within the Center (library, coffee and side tables, periodicals, pamphlets) Will assist with room set-up as required for programs, functions, or eventsOrganization: The Dempsey Center The Volunteer assigned to Client Services Assistant provides services to enhance the client experience.
